Principles of Material Selection for Auto Stamping Parts


A large number of cold stamping technologies are used in the production of auto stamping parts, which are suitable for the industrial production of a wide variety and large quantities of auto stamping parts. In medium and heavy-duty vehicles, most coverage parts, such as outer body panels, and some bearing and supporting parts, such as frames and carriages, are auto stamping parts. The steel plates and strips used for cold stamping account for 72.6% of the total steel consumption of a vehicle. The relationship between stamping materials and the production of auto stamping parts is very close. The quality of the material not only determines the performance of the product, but also directly affects the process design of auto stamping parts, and affects the quality, cost, service life, and production organization of the product. Therefore, selecting materials reasonably is an important and complex task.


When selecting materials, different metal materials with different mechanical properties are selected according to the type and use characteristics of the auto stamping, in order to ensure the quality of the product and save materials. Generally, when selecting materials for auto stamping parts, the following principles should be followed: the selected materials should first meet the performance requirements of the automobile parts; the selected materials should have good processability; and the selected materials should have good economy.


Three Characteristics of Auto Stamping Parts


Auto stamping parts are mainly formed by stamping metal or non-metal plates with the pressure of a press through stamping molds. They have the following characteristics:


  • Car stamping parts are manufactured by stamping and have a lightweight and good stiffness under the premise of low material consumption. After the plastic deformation of the sheet metal, the internal organization of the metal is improved, and the strength of the stamping parts is increased.


  • Car stamping parts have high standard accuracy and uniformity with the mold, and good interchangeability. They can meet general assembly and application requirements without further mechanical processing.


  • In the stamping process of car stamping parts, the surface of the material is not damaged, so they have good surface quality, a smooth and beautiful appearance, which provides convenient conditions for surface painting, electroplating, phosphating, and other surface treatments.
